North Cornwall Museum, Camelford
Camelford, in Cornish, Reskammel, is a small town in the Parish of Lanteglos-by-Camelford, situated between Bodmin Moor and Cornwall's Atlantic coast .
The town is home to the North Cornwall Museum and Gallery located in the same building as the Tourist Information Centre (See below).
The Museum has a fine collection of artefacts which give a great insight into the many aspects of life in North Cornwall during the last 100 years. These include an amazing array of tools associated with traditional industries.
The Gallery has regular exhibitions of paintings, pottery and textiles. Please click on Events on for details of forthcoming exhibitions.
At Slaughter Bridge close to Camelford is an inscribed stone, nearly 10ft (3m) in length situated on the bank of the Camel River. It is believed to date from around the 6th or 7th Century. The inscription in Latin 'Latini ic iacit filius Magari' - Latinus lies here, son of Magarus, is also reproduced on the stone in Ogham symbols.
Camelford and the surrounding area has much to offer historians and those with an interest in archaeology. Nearby Rough(pronounced Row) Tor has a number of archaeological features including Round House Settlements, a Tor Enclosure and a nearby stone circle.
