Falmouth is a large thriving town situated on the magnificent Fal estuary on Cornwall's South coast. It's harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
Beaches in and around Falmouth
Falmouth has a number of fine beaches near the town: Castle Beach; Gyllyngvase; Swanpool and Maenporth.
- Gyllyngvase Beach
Gyllyngvase is the main beach of Falmouth. It is a wide sandy beach with a Blue Flag award. You can walk to it from the town. Facilities include a cafe, shop, gardens, toilets and parking - car park close to the beach and some parking on Cliff Road.
Dogs are not allowed on Gyllyngvase beach between Easter and October 1st but it is dog friendly between October and Easter when dogs are allowed.

- Castle Beach
Castle Beach is a small beach which is a mixture of sand and rocks. It has rock pools. Facilities include toilets near to the beach, car park at Gyllyngvase beach from where you can walk to Castle beach or at Pendennis Point and road parking on Cliff Road, shop. There is no lifeguard service.
Dogs are not allowed on Castle beach between Easter and October 1st but it is dog friendly between October and Easter when dogs are allowed.
- Swanpool Beach
Swanpool Beach is a sheltered sandy beach outside of Falmouth. Facilities include toilets, car park, cafe and a shop. The beach is easily accessible from the parking area. No lifeguard service.
Dogs are not allowed on Swanpool beach between Easter and October 1st but it is dog friendly between October and Easter when dogs are allowed.
- Maenporth Beach
Maenporth is a sheltered sandy beach a short drive from Falmouth. The beach has easy access from the car park. Facilities include toilets, cafe and car park.
Some lifeguard cover provided by the Falmouth Surf Life Saving Club.
Dogs are not allowed on Maenporth beach between Easter and October 1st but it is dog friendly between October and Easter when dogs are allowed.
Falmouth in History
The town has had a long and involved history since its foundation in the Elizabethan period. It was developed as a port by the Killigrew family, whose mansion, Arwenack, still remains, in part, at Grove Place. An obelisk was erected in 1737 to honour the family.
For nearly 200 years Falmouth was the home port of the Royal Mail Packet ships, becoming a seaside resort in the late 19th century after Falmouth became part of the rail network.
A full range of commercial facilities can be found in Falmouth, with branches of all the major banks, Post Office, famous high street stores and a large number of interesting specialist shops including galleries, antique stores and antiquarian book shops.

There are a number of water based events held at Falmouth throughout the year including yacht racing and regattas. The Falmouth Oyster Festival, held every October is a celebration of Cornish sea food with exhibitions, cookery demonstrations and a variety of entertainment.
