Castle Dore

Castle Dore

Castle Dore, near Fowey, is an Iron Age hill fort dating from around the 5th century BC.

The fort is bivallate, consisting of two ditches around a circular area which is 259 feet (79 metres) in diameter. During a later stage in its use, earth ramparts were built inside the ditch to a height of 8 ft 2 in (2.5 metres) and a new entrance was constructed.

It is believed the fort fell into disuse around the 1st century BC.

Castle Dore was excavated in the 1930s by Ralegh Radford. He discovered post holes which suggested that the site had been occupied in two distinct periods, both within the Iron Age.

Iron Age pottery was found during the excavation which was radiocarbon dated supporting the first occupation period of the 5th century BC.
