Open Day, 19 June 2010.
Real Growers, an exciting training programme which offers local people the opportunity to learn new skills in food production and sustainable living, will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 19 June at their food production site at Plan-it Earth in Sancreed, near Penzance.
The local community is invited to head up to the site and take a look around, find out what Real Growers is all about and even sample and buy some of the produce and plants grown by the Real Growers trainees.
Developed by the Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) in partnership with Plan-It Earth, Real Growers has been running since February with six trainees learning the skills and knowledge needed to plan, grow and harvest crops in a sustainable way.
And now, four months in, the trainee Real Growers’ efforts are coming to fruition. They have developed a large area of the existing Plan-it Earth site and are currently growing around 40 different types of produce, from root vegetables to salad, herbs and fruit with the aim of selling their produce to the local community.
Visitors to the Open Day will be able to see the growing crops, find out about the techniques and processes the Real Growers trainees have employed, buy fresh salad and even pick up a few plants that have been brought on from seed and are perfect for planting in the garden right now.
“We’re really excited to show people what the Real Growers trainees have achieved in just four months,” says Dan Thomas, Real Growers mentor and experienced horticulturalist. “Not only have they successfully planted and grown an impressive array of fruit and vegetables, their own skills, knowledge and confidence has grown too. It’s been a great programme.”
Part of RIO’s delivery of the Future Jobs Fund in Cornwall, a Government programme designed to help people get back into work, the training programme has grown from RIO’s experience working with young people in the outdoor environment. It is hoped that eventually Real Growers will feed into a social enterprise venture which will supply vegetable boxes to local schools and businesses, running markets and offering training and workshops for young people looking to develop growing skills.
The Open Day kicks off at 11am on the 19 June and everyone is welcome. Guided tours of the site will be run every hour from 11am until 4pm. To find out more or to book a place on one of the tours get in touch with Jen Tredinnick, email@example.com or call 07966 892205 .
