Chapel Porth is a beautiful rocky cove tucked away on Cornwall's North coast between Porthtowan and St Agnes.
At high tide the porth is completely covered by the sea and you can enjoy watching the waves breaking a few feet in front of you by standing in the stream-side car park(or even sitting in your car). During wild and windy weather, the waves crash onto the beach and onshore winds whip the stream and the sea into a frenzy of foaming water.
The fantastic waves make Chapel Porth very popular with surfers.
Chapel Porth is popular as a launching site for hang gliders. Visiting pilots should ring the Kernow Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association before using their flying sites. Tel: 01872 273839 or 07980 275 918 before flying.
There are excellent walks along the coastal footpath, to the south, between Chapel Porth and Porthtowan and to the north, in the direction of St Agnes, where you will pass one of Cornwall's most picturesquely sited mine engine houses, perched high on the cliffs above the roaring Atlantic Ocean.
A walk up the valley, Chapel Coombe, is also full of interest, with remnants of Cornwall's mining heritage and a varied flora and fauna. After climbing up through the valley, the footpath joins a winding lane from which you can access the road to Mount Hawke and Porthtowan.
A famous Cornish legend is associated with Chapel Porth. On the cliffs on the north side of the beach, is a basin in the rocks which opens out into a cave on the beach. The red-stained rocks are a reminder of the giant Bolster, who is said to have died here, bled to death by his obsessive love for Saint Agnes. See Folklore
