Hayle Estuary Nature Reserve is the most south westerly estuary in the UK providing a sanctuary for thousands of birds during the cold winter months.
Its location makes it the warmest place to be when the rest of the UK is suffering from cold weather. As many as 18,000 birds have been recorded here during a cold winter.
The habitat consists of mudflats, saltmarsh and a tidal lagoon.
The RSPB owns the estuary which consists of several distinct areas for you to explore - Ryan's Field, where a hide is located for watching birds on the tidal lagoon and saltmarsh, especially during high spring tides between September and March; Lelant Water, where you will often see birdwatchers standing by the wall beside the B3301 observing large flocks of ducks during the winter; Carnsew Pool, excellent during the winter for divers; and Copperhouse Pool which provides a circular walk using the King George V Memorial Walk from which you can often see young shelducks during the summer.
During migrations you can spot rare and unusual birds from around the world who stop here.
All year round residents include Curlew. Their numbers are boosted during the winter.
