Luckett Wood Nature Reserve is a 7 acre (3 hectare) reserve within Greenscombe Wood, consisting of broad-leaved woodland, with sessile oak, dry heath and a commercial conifer plantation
A varied habitat, the reserve supports a wide diversity of animals, birds and plants. A stream runs through the reserve. The reserve is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
Although it is possible to visit an any time of year, the best time to visit is during spring and early summer.
Wildlife you are likely to see at Luckett Wood: Over twenty species of butterfly including, the very rare heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia), on warm, sunny days from May to July, and 5 other British fritillaries; birdlife includes woodpeckers, willow warblers, nut hatches, long-tailed tits and buzzards; plants such as the rare Cornish bladder seed (Physospermum cornubiense), Toadlflax-leaved St John’s Wort (Hypericum linarifolium), ferns, honey-coloured bird's nest orchid, common twayblade orchids and 3 other orchid species; animal life including grey squirrel, roe deer, badger, fox and stoat.
The reserve is used for butterfly monitoring by the Natural Environment Research Council.
Parts of the reserve were formerly used as a market garden and you can still find cultivated strawberry plants growing during the summer.
Of the ancient woodland here, much of it would have been managed as oak coppice.

The reserve is dog friendly with dogs allowed all year round.
There is an information board on site.

Grid ref SX 391723 (south entrance)
From Gunnislake, take the A390 west . After 2.5 miles (4.5 km), turn right towards Kelly Bray. At Monkscross, make a right turn towards Luckett.
Leave the car park, walk to your left, along the lane 0.5 miles (0.9 km) then into the woodland. An information board is located just beyond a small quarry on the right.
