Pawton Quoit or the Giant's Quoit as it is sometimes known, is a Penwith chamber tomb, located in the Parish of St Breock.
The tomb dates from the neolithic period, sometime between 4000 BC and 2500 BC.
Relatively small, upright stones support a giant capstone estimated to weigh over 14 tons.
It is the largest in Cornwall.
The chamber is approx. 2m by 1m.
The capstone is now 12ft/3.6m long, 7ft/2.1m wide, 2.5ft/0.7m thick but the broken piece of capstone lying on the ground suggests it would have been closer to 15ft/4.6m long.
The mound which would have originally covered the tomb can still be seen. It has been ploughed out to a height of 4ft/1.2m. The mound is 69ft/21m by 49ft/15m.
Location:
Pawton Quoit is located in a field just before Haycrock Farm. It is sometimes quite overgrown. Explorer 106 SW 966696.
