Trevellas Porth is a pebble and sand beach at the end of Trevellas Coombe, near St Agnes.
The beach is popular with families, walkers, dog owners local fishermen, divers and snorkelers.
A pretty stream flows down the valley and onto the beach, passing numerous examples of Cornwall's mining heritage on its way.
Engine houses and the remains of them can be seen scattered throughout the valley.
The Blue Hills Mine was located here. Its 60 inch pumping engine house and separate chimney stack can still be seen. Wheal Betsy, North Blue Hills Mine (Wheal Ocean), Wheal Dellick, Wheal Dragon, Wheal Glyn, Wheal Joy, Goonlaze Mine and Wheal Pink all operated in this locality.
Most of these older workings, some of which are many centuries old, cannot be identified today but they survive in the names given to the lodes of the more recent workings.
Cassiterite (tin) was the main ore extracted here.
The valley is often referred to as 'Blue Hills' and it is also known as 'Jericho Valley'.
There is a car park near the beach and another car park on the clifftop above the valley on its St Agnes side. This second car park has a footpath that leads to the coast path where you can walk down to Trevellas Porth on a wide, rough track with stunning views of the coastline and the valley.
This track becomes very busy on Easter Saturday when the Motor Cycling Club (MCC) uses it in their Land's End Trial. Motorcycles and cars ascend the track, having to stop and restart on one of its steepest points while hundreds of onlookers sitting on the cliff above the track cheer them on.
The place name, Trevellas, first appeared in 1302. It was the name of the manor owned by the Trevellas family.
The famous portrait artist, John Opie, was born at Trevellas on the 16th May 1761.
At low tide it is possible to walk to Trevaunance Cove across large rocks and through rock pools.
You can return via the same route if the tide allows otherwise you can use the coast path, accessible from just above Trevaunance Cove or the path through the Down Quay Gardens, starting near the public toilets.
Trevellas Porth has no facilities. No toilets - the nearest are at Trevaunance Cove.
There is no lifeguard service at this beach.
Trevellas Porth is dog friendly with dogs allowed on the beach all year round.
