Davidstow, in Cornish, Lanndhewi, is an ecclesiastic and civil parish and village in north Cornwall.
The name, Davidstow shows an English influence, probably due to its location in the north of Cornwall - stow means 'meeting place', possibly 'holy meeting place' and is from the Anglo Saxon language rather then Celtic, so Davidstow is probably 'David's meeting place'.
Its Parish Church is thought to have been founded in the 6th century by St David, when he came to Cornwall to visit his mother at Altarnun. In 1875, the church underwent a major restoration leaving little of the original interior. There are some good bench ends and unusually sized windows in the nave and the east window.
In the church yard is the grave of Charlotte Dymond, a young woman murdered at Rough Tor in 1844.
St David's Holy Well is located close to the church.
Hallworthy, Hendraburnick, Tremail and Trewassa hamlets are in the Parish of Davidstow.
During the Second World an airfield was built at Davidstow. RAF Davidstow Moor can still be seen and some of the buildings are still standing.
Today, Davidstow is the home of a major Creamery. Operated by Dairy Crest, it produces 'Davidstow Cheddar' and 'Cathedral City' cheeses.
Treglasta Manor, in Davidstow parish, was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086). It was held by Robert, Count of Mortain; before 1066 it had been held by Earl Harold. There were 6 hides of land and land for 20 ploughs. The lord had one hide of land with 2 ploughs and 15 serfs. 24 villeins and 20 smallholders had the rest of the land with 12 ploughs. There were 300 acres of pasture, 4 unbroken mares, 4 cattle and 50 sheep. The value of the manor had been 12 silver marks (i.e. £8 sterling) but was in 1086 worth £15-18-4d.
The modern home known as Treglasta Manor overlooks Rough Tor.
