Hawkes Wood is an old oak woodland a short distance from Wadebridge.
Two streams flow through the wood and there is a disused quarry with fine stands of fern.
Coppiced oak, sycamore and ash are the dominant species with holly, hazel, beech and wild cherry. The ground flora is dominated by bramble and honeysuckle with other woodland flowers including bluebell, herb robert, primrose, sweet woodruff and wood anemone. Kingcups grow near the stream.
Many birds including the nuthatch, jay, tawny owl, green and great spotted woodpeckers, buzzard and tree creeper.
Other wildlife includes: badger, grey squirrel, mink - both black and brown varieties; fox and otters have been observed in the the stream.
Britain's commonest and smallest bat, the pipistrelle is seen here.
A variety of butterflies are seen here, including tortoiseshell, silver washed fritillary, ringlet and more. The elephant hawkmoth caterpillar feeds at night on the soft hairy leaves of willow herb. The moth can be seen in June.
Prior to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust beginning to manage the site, the woodland had been neglected since the end of the First World War.
