Par is a small town with a busy working port, shipping china clay to many countries around the world.
The port has a long history having been in operation since the early 1800s, when it was constructed for the shipping of minerals.
Joseph Treffry (formerly Austen) started buliding Par's harbour in 1829. It was completed in 1840. Prior to this Austen had acquired the ferry which was until 1824, the only way to cross the River Par. He replaced the ferry with a new bridge.
Initially, the cargo shipped from the harbour was entirely from Austen's own mines and quarries near St Blazey.
Today the tall china clay drying chimneys near the docks can be seen with plumes of white steam rising into the air as they dry the fine china clay before it leaves the port.
Par has a large sandy beach which lies to the east of the harbour.
