National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) - Cornwall
NCI Cornwall The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) is a voluntary organisation providing a visual watch around the UK. Each station plays its part in the protection and preservation of life at sea and around the UK coastline. There are 46 NCI stations operating around the UK, staffed by over 1900 volunteers. 13 of these Coastwatch stations are located around the coastline of Cornwall, staffed by over 500 watchkeepers. Volunteer watchkeepers keep a visual watch, monitor radio channels and provide a listening watch in low visibility conditions. There are currently 1900+ volunteers under training. They are the eyes and ears of the coast whether you're around the coast for leisure purposes - sailing, windsurfing, kayakking, diving, fishing, hiking, etc. or if you're working on the sea. All the watchkeepers are fully trained to deal with emergencies. In 2010 NCI Cornwall was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service. The NCI is a registered charity. It relies on local support and donations.
