The Wheal Martyn to Eden Trail is a multi-use trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders which links into the other Clay Trails.
Length of trail: 5 miles (8 km)
The Wheal Martyn Trail takes you through areas of unique clay country, passing through a variety of terrains - rocky areas, grass and heather, crossing woodland and heathland and travelling close to working mines and clay pits with their unusual looking green pools.
This wild and beautiful trail immerses you in the past and present of china clay mining with extraordinary views in every direction.
It provides some of the clearest views of the working clay mines and how the clay is extracted from the pits with modern high pressure hoses while giving you wonderful views of the rural, former industrial scenery including overgrown 19th century chimneys, formerly used in the drying of china clay.
The entrance to Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park is located on the Bodmin Road in the village of Carthew.
Information for Walkers
Parts of the the trail are slightly difficult for walkers. Wheelchair users and their helpers may struggle in places due to long inclines.
For those arriving by car, you are allowed to park in the museum's car park for the duration of your walk. During the summer months the museum can get quite busy so if in doubt please ask the staff where best to park. Visitors to the Clay Trails using the museum car park may like to make a small donation at the Reception Desk to help towards the charitable work of the museum.
There are a few shelters along the route of the trail.
Information for Horse riders
Horse riders arriving with a trailer to use the Wheal Martyn China Clay Country Park Trail should park their trailers in the corner of the car park nearest to the trail to avoid hindering visitors to the museum.
This trail links into the St Austell Trail (The Green Corridor)
and the National Cycle Network Route 3 as it approaches Eden
