Long Rock is a small town situated on Mounts Bay.
This Long Rock reef was once part of the land. It is quite inaccessible to any but an experienced (preferably, professional) rock climber with a wet suit, because its danger cannot be over estimated.
When I left it two weeks ago, the pool water was half way up my trousers! The sea completely covers the reef in a high tide. Having walked over at least half of it on the 27th May, I have witnessed that there is evidence to show that its record in ‘History of St Michael’s Mount by W. S. Lach-Szyrma (1878) as to it once being gardens – probably in mediaeval times when Porth Plement still existed, is really plausible, but documentary evidence back to the medieval times is required to prove this.
Locally a man has seen what appears to be a cove on its south seaward side; but the 16th century painting of Mount’s Bay shows only rock for that area. The reef has at least three natural rockeries, the first having small steps at its rear on the right. It must have been really exotic when it was gardens. Sticking out of the foreground beach one can see the upper section of a long stone.
Beyond the reef is a buoy to warn ships as to its presence. Around that area was one of the most lucrative mines in West Cornwall, that was diked off to prevent the sea encroaching, until a ship accidentally struck the dikes, causing flooding down its shaft. Most of the beautiful eel grass was severely damaged by the 2014 spring tides.
