Longships Lighthouse is located about 1.25 miles (2.01 km) from Lands End.
It stands on a small island known as Carn Bras which is the highest of the Longships islets.
The first tower was constructed in 1795, from a design by Samuel Wyatt, Trinity House architect. The light stood at 79 feet (24 metres) above sea level but the heavy seas here often obscured it so in 1869 the construction of a replacement tower began. This new granite tower was lit for the first time in 1873. Its construction cost £43,870.
Testimony to the danger of these waters, despite the presence of the lighthouse, 25 years later the S S Bluejacket was wrecked here.
Todays lantern has a range of 11 nautical miles (13 miles, 20 km), emitting one long five-second flash every ten seconds. The Fog horn sounds every ten seconds.
As with all of Cornwall's lighthouses, the Longships is now automated. The last lighthouse keepers left in 1988.
