St Breock Downs contains a huge number of Bronze Age rounds barrows, otherwise known as tumuli.
It has been suggested that this is a barrow cemetery and the large quantity of these ancient monuments. Over seventy of them are still visible on the high point of the Downs, the ridge that runs for seven miles/eleven kilometres.
Some are better preserved than others. Several are still over 6ft 6in/2m tall while the rest have been ploughed out to a lesser or greater extent over the centuries. They date from between 2500 BC and 1000 BC.
The best preserved example is at SW 941681. This barrow is 59ft/18m in diameter and 8ft/2.4m high.
Another good example is 95ft/29m in diameter and 6ft 6inft/2m high and can be found at SW 952682.
The number of tumuli and other ancient sites in this area make it an excellent place to visit for those who enjoy walking and archaeology.
