The Men Gurta is a huge monolith, menhir or standing stone situated on St Breock Downs, near Wadebridge
The heaviest and largest menhir in Cornwall at 16ft (5 m) high the Men Gurta (Stone of Waiting) used to be the site of a special service of commemoration of St Petroc on June 4th (St Petroc's Day) for the clergy and parishioners of Bodmin, Little Petherick and Padstow which were all established by St Petroc.
The Men Gurta is mentioned in bounds of parish in 1613. This area of St Breock Downs was open pasture and moorland until the 1950s when it was enclosed.
Another smaller menhir can be seen on St Breock Downs. 7 ft/2 m tall, it stands in a field on the edge of a windfarm, next to the lane which crosses the downs.
