The Strangles is a sandy beach between Tintagel and Bude on the north coast of Cornwall.
A west-facing beach it extends to 1.5 mile at low tide, when it merges with the two adjacent beaches. A large rock arch, known as the Northern Door, can be seen at the northern extremity of the three beaches and there are other interesting geological formations with impressive, folded sedimentary rocks.
At high water the beach is stony. The southern end of the beach has many rocky ledges.
At low water there are numerous rock pools to explore, particularly at the southern end of the beach between The Strangles and Alder Strand.
Due to its location at the base of high cliffs, with a long and strenuous access path, the beach is usually quiet.
The highest cliffs in Cornwall, High Cliff (over 700 feet / 200 metres) is nearby.
No lifeguard service.
Rescue equipment is available above the beach.
Due to strong currents, The Strangles is not suitable for swimming.
Surfing is possible but only for the experienced as there are many submerged rocks.
Beware of rock falls.
At low tide you can access the adjacent beaches, Little Strand and Alder Strand.
Samphire Rock stands at the northern end of the beach in between The Strangles and Little Strand.
There is a small National Trust car park on the roadside opposite the footpath down to the beach and coast path. Access to the beach is by a path to the coast just north of Trevigue Farm.
Crackington Haven is a short distance along the coast.
No facilities. The nearest are at Crackington Haven (2km) or
Boscastle (7.5km) where you can find toilets, cafes, shops and pubs.
The Strangles is dog friendly with dogs allowed all year round. Infirm dogs may have difficulties due to the long access.
