Spring is finally here and Cornwall's wildflowers are beginning to bloom.

Here you can see Bluebell (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) and Greater Stitchwort (Stellaria holostea).

Bluebells have many common names including Bell bottle, Cuckoo’s Boots, English bluebell, Lady’s Nightcap, Wild hyacinth, Wood bell, Wood hyacinth and Witches’ Thimbles. In Cornish dialect they are called Guckroos, Gucu and Cockoo.

Greater stitchwort has a number of common names including 'Daddy's-shirt-buttons', 'Star-of-Bethlehem', 'Snapdragon' and 'Wedding Cakes'. In Cornwall they have been known as Piskie, Pixie, or Pixy. A tradition existed that if you gathered the flowers you would be piskie led.

This lovely woodland is tucked away near Lamorna and St Buryan. Parking is very limited.

You can also access St Loy Woods from the coast path between Penberth Cove and Lamorna.
