Penzance
On the 31st October 2012 the helicopter service from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly, operated by British International Helicopters (BIH) , was withdrawn after 48 years.
The convenience of a fast, year-round service from Penzance was lost.
The helicopter service has been missed by many, including ourselves, for its quick and easy access to the Isles of Scilly.
After almost six years, there are now plans for a new helicopter service to operate from a custom built heliport on a site at Jelbert Way, very close to where the original heliport was based.
The new service to be operated by Penzance Heliport Ltd will use the state-of-the-art AW139 helicopter, the market leader, known for its safety, performance and reliability. The helicopter is significantly quieter and faster than the previous aircraft used on the route.
The helicopter will serve both St. Mary's Airport (EGHE/ISC) and Tresco Heliport (EGHT/TSO), providing a year-round, weather-resilient transport service to the islands which complements existing sea and air links.
The service will offer a flight time of just 15 minutes, so even if you're making a day trip to the islands, you'll have plenty of time to explore the Isles of Scilly and enjoy the boat trips offered by the St Mary's Boatmen's Association.
Penzance is the ideal location for the new heliport as it makes use of the local infrastructure enjoyed for forty eight years by the previous service including:
Excellent access to the strategic road and rail networks, with its proximity to the A30 and Penzance rail station on the Great Western mainline, with direct services to London and the southeast, the Midlands and Scotland.
Operations from a low altitude, near sea level site, giving the benefit of a significantly lower risk of the service being affected by low cloud and fog.
Penzance provides excellent tourist facilities with accommodation, shops, restaurants and other services on hand and available for passengers.
Islanders will benefit from direct access to the range of essential services in Penzance and visitors will enjoy the convenience of a short, rapid flight, only minutes away from the centre of Penzance.
Penzance Heliport will offer up to 17 return flights per day to the islands and they hope to operate a limited Sunday schedule.
