‘Crackington Haven. A Century of Change. The Memoirs of Alfred Thomas Tilley’ - A Review

Crackington Haven

‘Crackington Haven. A Century of Change. The Memoirs of Alfred Thomas Tilley’ is a fascinating read for everyone interested in Cornwall.

This north Cornwall haven in the parish of St Gennys is described through the experiences of a resident who lived his life in Crackington. Now almost 100 years old Alfred’s memories of the area have been made available in this excellent book with the help of his daughter Julia Woolgar.

The book includes chapters on the History of Crackington Manor Estate, Mining, Farming, Transport, St Gennys School, World War 2, Coast, Weather and many more insights into daily life in a bygone age.

The changes that Crackington Haven has undergone are a reflection of how the whole of Cornwall itself has changed dramatically in the last 100 years. With enormous changes occurring so rapidly it is important to remember how different life was just a short time ago and to ensure that this information is kept alive for future generations. This book does this excellently.

“ …. Crackington Haven is a special place. Sometimes beautiful areas become a victim of their own success. I sincerely hope Crackington will remain a haven of tranquility and peace, a very special place for all generations to come” Alfred Thomas Tilley.

Illustrated throughout with many photographs, maps, newspaper excerpts and line drawings.

‘Crackington Haven: A Century of Change. The Memoirs of Alfred Thomas Tilley’ 2016 is available from the local Post Offices at Crackington and Wainhouse and from Spencer Thorn Book Store at Belle Vue, Bude.

The book is also available by post. email contact: jawoolgar@btinternet.com
