For surfers there are two notable reef breaks. One is located in front of Downderry Primary School. You must walk in across the rocks. Access is along a path beside the Primary School.
The other is located moreorless off the slip-way on the main beach. This is good during a reasonably heavy swell when the tide is at mid-point. You can paddle out directly from the beach.
There is a small car park in the village centre from which it is easy to access the western end of Downderry beach via a path/slipway. Public toilets are situated at the car park. Boats can also be launched. There is disabled access to the western beach.
There is a small amount of on-road parking east of Downderry. At low tide you can also park at Seaton and walk along the beach to Downderry.
Bass Rock, a rocky outcrop to the east of the beach is a popular spot for fishing.
Snorkellers will enjoy the area around Coldeadon Point and off Bass Rock. There are also
many fascinating rock pools.
Downderry has a Church of England church, a Methodist chapel, Primary School and a Post Office.
The Church of St Nicolas at Downderry began as a mission church. The building dates from the late 19th century.
