Downderry Beach

Downderry Beach

Downderry, in Cornish, Downderri is a coastal village in the parish of Deviock in southeast Cornwall.

Downderry has a long, south facing, sand and shingle beach with rock pools at low tide.

The beach is split into a number of beaches each with their own name and characteristics.
Visit our Downderry Beaches page.

For surfers there are two notable reef breaks. One is located in front of Downderry Primary School. You must walk in across the rocks. Access is along a path beside the Primary School.
The other is located moreorless off the slip-way on the main beach. This is good during a reasonably heavy swell when the tide is at mid-point. You can paddle out directly from the beach.

There is a small car park in the village centre from which it is easy to access the western end of Downderry beach via a path/slipway. Public toilets are situated at the car park. Boats can also be launched. There is disabled access to the western beach.

There is a small amount of on-road parking east of Downderry. At low tide you can also park at Seaton and walk along the beach to Downderry.

Bass Rock, a rocky outcrop to the east of the beach is a popular spot for fishing.

Snorkellers will enjoy the area around Coldeadon Point and off Bass Rock. There are also
many fascinating rock pools.

Downderry has a Church of England church, a Methodist chapel, Primary School and a Post Office.

The Church of St Nicolas at Downderry began as a mission church. The building dates from the late 19th century.

Rock Climbing at Downderry

There are over 30 climbs at Downderry including Buried Treasure, The Promontory, The Wave, The Cave, Long Rock Climb and The Queen of Rock.

Walk eastwards along the beach for half a kilometre to the rock climbing area.
