Kennall Vale is a valley either side of the River Kennall which is both a nature reserve and a site of great historical interest having a wealth of industrial archaeological features, tucked away in the of Ponsanooth area between Redruth and Falmouth.
The Kennall Valley nature reserve is a wonderful place for walking and relaxing. Sit in the woodland beside the stream as it tumbles down the valley through old water wheels and leats. Explore the winding pathways to experience the plants and birdlife.
The history of the vale is fascinating. Kennall Mills were a great producer of gunpowder for the mining industry from 1812 being one of only two gunpowder works operating in Cornwall at this time. At the peak of its production in the 1860s the Kennall Company employed over 50 men.
The Kennall Company not only ran the Gunpowder Works but also owned 2 paper mills, a farm and a number of cottages in the locality, a thriving enterprise until it started to wain in the 1880s due to the collapse of the mining industry and the invention and production of alternatives to gunpowder, namely dynamite and gelignite.
Woollen mills also operated here associated with carpet making and the export of cloth.
During the heyday of its production, over 30 water-wheels were at work here.
As the Kennall River makes its way towards the A39, the ruins of Magdalen Mine can be found near the viaduct. This mine produced tin and employed 15 people as late as 1913.
