Providence Mines was formed in 1832 bringing together the mines of Wheal Speed, Wheal Laity, Wheal Comfort, Wheal Providence, Wheal Crack, Wheal Grace and Wheal Good Fortune.
Some of these mines are very ancient, with some working during the 1700s and others as far back as Elizabeth I's reign (1533-1603).
As with many of Cornwall's mines during the late 19th century, they were forced to close in 1877 due to the poor tin price as it was not economically viable to continue.
