‘U3A Roseland and District Committee celebrate their Lottery grant. L – R Shirley Davis, Peter Vigors-Evans, Jenny Deal and Peter Gane’.
Awards for All, part of the National Lottery organisation, which distributes funding to smaller community groups, has announced a grant for a local association based in the Roseland.
U3A Roseland and District, a member of the national Third Age Trust, was formed in August 2006 to provide educational, leisure and social activities for people who are no longer in full time employment, living in and around the Roseland Peninsula.
The grant of just under £3,000 will be used to increase the learning opportunities for U3A members through the purchase of a range of multi media products including a lap top computer, projection and photographic equipment.
U3A Chairman, Shirley Davis, commented, “This is marvellous news. As a small association serving fairly remote rural communities, we would never have been able fund this expansion of our activities without the help of Awards for All.”
At present the regular activity groups available to members of U3A Roseland and District include art, computers online, local history, family history and reading with embroidery and Shakespeare in the pipeline. Venues are Portscatho, Probus, Tregony and Veryan. Other periodic activities include garden visits, walking and day trips to local places of interest.
The first new group to take advantage of the equipment funded by the Awards for All grant will be Shakespeare’s World, a study of his works and life, which will hold its initial meeting at Veryan Parish Hall on 23rd July between 10.00 am and 12.30 pm.
“We have come a long way in the last 10 months and this will make a big difference to our future growth,” said Shirley Davis. “Visitors are always welcome to come to one of our monthly meetings to find out more about us.”
The next monthly meeting of U3A Roseland and District will be on Monday 16th July between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm at Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall, Portscatho when there will also be an opportunity to learn about the work of the National Trust in Cornwall. Visit www.u3aroseland.org.uk for more information or telephone Shirley on 01872 – 270030.
