Preparations are almost completed for the Mawgan Church Daffodil Festival taking place at the 13th century Grade I listed church of St Mawgan in Meneage. The event spans the weekend of the 16th – 18th February, from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm each day, and is free to enter.
We watch the weather anxiously as picking is affected by cold or rain, sympathise with the pickers out in the wet and mud in all weathers, but are assured, by our sponsors the Scrimshaw family of R H Scrimshaw and Sons Limited, that by this weekend thousands of daffodils will be delivered as green pencils. We then pray for sun and warmth to bring them into full flower for the following special weekend. We hope again to claim Wordsworth’s famous ten thousand lovely yellow trumpet daffodils in the church, displayed in many different ways, with plenty for sale.
Timetables, rotas and lists involving over 50 people are finalised, ribbons are being fashioned into bows and catering is planned. The pasties are confirmed from Gear Farm Shop, Mawgan Stores will provide the rolls to go with the homemade soup and juice is coming from Helford Creek. Posters, printed by Quay Design & One Stop Printers are distributed and roadside signs in place. Sponsorship is being received from companies including Moores Floors, Trelowarren Estate and Pendle Funeral Services who have supported us from the first event in 2007.
The Vyvyan Coach House is ready for the hundreds of people who will enjoy the refreshments there. Pasties and soup will be available at lunchtime on Saturday and Sunday and tea or coffee and homemade cakes will be available all day every day.
The programme of events is almost finalised and will include Christine Robertson and friends playing dulcimer and singing medieval and folk music, Cornish male voice singers, Richard Collington playing classical guitar, Maen Voes Choir from St Keverne and Sue Garland and Andrew Woods playing the organ.
There will be lots of information about the daffodil industry to see, art and craft displays to enjoy and on Sunday evening at 5pm there will be a Celtic evening service, taken by the Revd Mike North, when the guest preacher is the new Bishop of Truro, the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen.

The local daffodil industry swings into gear early in January with millions of stems being picked every day in Cornwall. We are lucky to be surrounded by flowers in West Cornwall and want to celebrate the beautiful and varied daffodil and its industry.
So preparations are well ahead in the village of Mawgan in Meneage for the seventh Daffodil Festival at the 12th century Grade I listed church of St Mawgan in Meneage. The church was fully restored in 2017, including a new roof, and the proceeds from this event will help maintain the church to a high standard.
The Mawgan Daffodil Festivals celebrate the wonderful industry that surrounds us in West Cornwall, and the delightful and varied daffodil, by decking this beautiful church with thousands of daffodils of every variety available at the time.
Give all your senses a treat and come and enjoy the sight and smell of thousands of daffodils, view displays of equipment used over 50 years ago, listen to music from local musicians and admire displays of paintings, photographs and other crafts with a daffodil theme.
You can also learn about the flower and the industry. Did you know that the only species of daffodil generally accepted as native to Britain is narcissus psuedonarcissus, the “Bastard” Daffodil, Lent Lily or Wild English Daffodil? Or that on one farm on the Lizard over 130 varieties were grown at one time? Do you know the difference between a narcissus and a daffodil?
The music this year so far includes local organists, local classical instrumentalists, Maen Voes Choir from St Keverne and the bell ringers will be in action on Saturday and Sunday.

Taking place on Saturday February 16th to Monday February 18th from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm each day the festival is free to enter.
Light refreshments will be available including pasties and homemade soup at lunchtime on Saturday and Sunday and tea and cakes all day every day.
On Sunday there is a Celtic evening service at 5.00pm, taken by the new Priest in Charge of the Meneage Benefice, the Revd Mike North.
