A Review

The University of the Third Age (U3A) Roseland and District was formed in August 2006 with 17 members since which time that number has increased considerably (120 in September 2008). The aim of the U3A is to improve the quality of life for older people, although the term ‘older’ is confusing as there is no lower age limited to joining. This is because certain tasks in leadership and management are ideally suited to younger people and they, in turn, will have experience when they are no longer able to help with the more manual aspects of U3A life; for example, setting out tables for events.

Activity groups are numerous and are formed when a group of people have an interest in a particular subject, and one (or more) of those members is prepared to lead or co-ordinate the group. A Groups’ Co-ordinator helps with obtaining a suitable venue, arranges an inaugural meeting to assess interest, helps it to start, and keeps a watchful eye to ensure everyone is happy and there are no problems. At present the regular activity groups available to members – free of charge – are art, computers (2), Shakespeare and associated history, embroidery, patchwork (Probus); knitting and crochet, digital imaging, board and card games (Tregony); family history, local interest, and a monthly meeting (Portscatho) with a walking group meeting at different venues. Cornish Language is being prepared to start in the autumn. A luncheon club meets monthly although you have to buy your own meal ticket! Other periodic activities like garden visits and day trips to local places of interest also take place.

Coach holidays feature twice a year; in autumn we travel to London to see two Shakespeare plays at Shakespeare’s Globe theatre, and Spring elsewhere – Llandrindod Wells in Wales in 2008 and Somerset (Montacute) in 2009.

An Awards for All lottery grant in 2007 has allowed the purchase of projection equipment, laptop computer and speakers, thereby enhancing the quality of presentations. Equipment has been used for Shakespeare, family history, digital imaging, patchwork, local interest and the monthly meetings.

The subscription fee for U3A Roseland and District is £15.00 per year starting 1st April. In order to be fair to everyone, the fee is reduced by £1.25 a month so that you only pay for the months you are a member. Committee comprises 5 members and other people carry out useful functions whilst not being Trustees.

Details of becoming part of this young, dynamic and enterprising organisation can be obtained by telephoning the membership secretary, Margaret Goudge, on 01726 – 65794 or by looking at our website www.u3aroseland.org.uk. Please remember – there is neither an upper nor lower age limit to joining the University of the Third Age Roseland and District. We welcome everyone.
