Polgwidden Cove is a shingle beach on the northern side of the Helford River with views stretching out to the open sea.
It lies at the end of the valley containing Trebah Gardens. The beach is also known as Trebah Beach.
A privately owned beach but open to the public who can access it when visiting Trebah Gardens. The Cornwall coast path passes the beach but does not give access to it.
The Boathouse on the beach, was originally built by the racing driver and designer of Healey cars, Donald Healey, to store his boats when he lived at Trebah in the 1960s.
It is now a cafe with seasonal opening hours.
Polgwidden beach had an important role during World War II. In June 1944, it was used by the American 29th Infantry Division as the embarkation point for a regiment of 7500 of thie troops to launch an attack on Omaha Beach in Normandy as part of the D-Day Landings.
During that period there would have been a number of concrete structures built here but many of these have since been removed by Donald Healey, when he lived at Trebah.
Polgwidden is Cornish and translates as 'wooded cove'.
Safe for bathing but stay close to the shore to avoid river currents.
