Cardinham, in Cornish, Kardhinan, is a beautiful moorland village on the west of Bodmin Moor with magnificent views of the surrounding area.
In the churchyard at Cardinham is a 10th century cross richly ornamented with intricate spirals.
The parish church is dedicated to Saint Meubredus the Martyr, murdered here, a hermit who is believed to have been the son of an Irish king. His body is said to have lain in the Oratory which pre-dated the existing 15th century church. His life is dated to the 5th or 6th century.
A window at nearby St Neot church shows a representation of Saint Meubred wearing a yellow cap on his head and with a short staff in his left hand, in his right hand he carries his head. The inscription reads, "Sancte Maberde ora pro nobis." He is believed to have been a companion of Saint Mancus and Saint Wyllow. His feast day at Cardinham is on the Thursday before Pentecost.
There are two holy wells in the parish, one is just outside the village and known as Trezance Holy Well. Follow the road leading north from Cardinham towards Millpool and the well is signposted to the right by a small wooden sign. The small stone well building has a number of carved stones which were probably part of the original Oratory. Water was used from this well for baptisms in the parish church.
The second holy well is situated on St Bellarmin's Tor.
Nearby are Cardinham Woods, which offer a variety of walking and cycling trails with something to suit most abilities.
