Mawgan, or Mawgan in Meneage, as it is also known to distinguish it from St Mawgan on the Atlantic coast, is a peaceful parish and village bordered to its north by the Helford River.
One of the Helford's many creeks, Mawgan Creek, extends towards the churchtown. This tree-lined creek was the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier's novel, Frenchman's Creek.
The parish is named from its churches dedication, Saint Mawgan.
Meneage is from the Cornish for 'monks land' and the area has had this name from the 10th century.
The parish church is dedicated to St Mawgan. The church dates from the 12th century. It has several interesting features including a monument and Coat of Arms of the Vyvyan family, a dog door and a 17th century sundial.
Mawgan hosts a Daffodil Festival in February celebrating the flower and the local industry with displays of daffodils in the Parish Church, information, photographs and historical items. This is a biennial event in odd numbered years only so the next one will take place in 2017, from the 18th to 20th of February.
The photographs showing Mawgan Church decorated with daffodils during the 2007 and 2009 festivals are kindly provided by courtesy of Wendy Bailey, Secretary to St Mawgan-In-Meneage PCC.
Archaeological features within Mawgan parish include: an inscribed stone dating from around the 10th century, known as the Mawgan Cross which bears the inscription 'cnegumi fili genaius' - Cnegumus, son of Genaius, which stands on the meeting point of three roads in the centre of the village; the Iron Age, Halliggye fogou which stands in private ground (Please ask for landowner's permission to view) which is the largest Cornish fogou with over 39 metres of passageways.
The ancient manor of Trelowarren lies within Mawgan parish. This fine building has been home to the Vyvyan family since the 1400s. Now, part of the house is used as a Christian retreat by the Trelowarren Christian Fellowship.
