Turnaware Point stands on the Roseland side of the Fal River and is famous for its association with the D Day landings.
The beach was being levelled and prepared as an emabarkation point from as early as 1943. Nissen huts and ammunition stores were located amongst the trees in the wood bordering Turnaware to hide their presence from any enemy observers trying to gain intelligence on the operation.
Units from the 29th Infantry Division, V Corps, U.S. Army left from here in June 1944 to make their landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 6th, the morning of D-Day. Today, a monument to them stands at the head of the lane leading to Turnaware beach.
